An Evaluation of the Bergeron-findeisen Precipitation Theory

چکیده
(3) The error is normally of the order of 1 percent a t the higher levels (5,000-20,000 feet) of an average curve. (4) When applied to the upper levels of a very stable curve (e. g. one featuring an extensive inversion), the rule leads to an overestimation of the height which may mount , to 4 percent or more in an extreme case. The formula i s least accurate when applied to the upper levels of such a curve. From the fact mentioned above, that in an average situation the percentage error is greatest in the lowest levels, it follows that the absolute error is small a t all heights in such a situation, and is usually of the order of 100-200 feet. rule is applied to the lower levels of an average curve. 1.

Limitations of the Wegener–Bergeron–Findeisen Mechanism in the Evolution of Mixed-Phase Clouds
Phase transformation and precipitation formation in mixed-phase clouds are usually associated with the Wegener–Bergeron–Findeisen (WBF) process in which ice crystals grow at the expense of liquid droplets. The evolution of mixed-phase clouds, however, is closely related to local thermodynamical conditions, and the WBF process is just one of three possible scenarios. The other two scenarios invo...
متن کاملThe Wegener-Bergeron-Findeisen process – Its discovery and vital importance for weather and climate
The Wegener-Bergeron-Findeisen process refers to the rapid growth of ice crystals at the expense of surrounding cloud droplets, which frequently occurs in atmospheric mixed-phase clouds. The process is a result of the difference in saturation vapor pressures with respect to liquid and ice, and may in some circumstances lead to abrupt and complete cloud glaciation at temperatures between −40 °C ...

Modeling of the Wegener–Bergeron– Findeisen process—implications for aerosol indirect effects
A new parameterization of the Wegener–Bergeron–Findeisen (WBF) process has been developed, and implemented in the general circulation model CAM-Oslo. The new parameterization scheme has important implications for the process of phase transition in mixed-phase clouds. The new treatment of the WBF process replaces a previous formulation, in which the onset of the WBF effect depended on a threshol...
متن کاملSimulations of Arctic mixed-phase clouds in forecasts with CAM3 and AM2 for M-PACE
[1] Simulations of mixed-phase clouds in forecasts with the NCAR Atmosphere Model version 3 (CAM3) and the GFDL Atmospheric Model version 2 (AM2) for the MixedPhase Arctic Cloud Experiment (M-PACE) are performed using analysis data from numerical weather prediction centers. CAM3 significantly underestimates the observed boundary layer mixed-phase cloud fraction and cannot realistically simulate...
